What Is a Salt Ceremony for Weddings?

Imagine exchanging your vows using sea salt hand-harvested from the Atlantic Ocean made especially for you and your partner, a tangible reminder that love, like the sea, endures. Including a salt ceremony transforms your wedding into an elemental experience, encapsulating ancient wisdom, deep meaning, and a connection to nature. The salt is a keepsake you can return to for years to come.

A salt ceremony, sometimes called a salt covenant, is an ancient ritual found in many cultures throughout history. Salt has long symbolized preservation, loyalty, purity, and the enduring nature of sacred promises.

During the ceremony, couples blend salt as a representation of a covenant that is meant to last, just as salt was once treasured for preserving what was most valuable.A salt ceremony creates a lasting symbol that can be displayed in your home, a reminder of your vows and your commitment to one another. This is a wedding ritual that feels intentional, personal, and connected to nature.

Who Am I?

I'm Dena Merlino Scott, founder of Sacred Salt Ceremonies and a wedding officiant serving Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, and coastal North Carolina. Since officiating my first wedding in 2016, I've specialized in creating ceremonies that feel deeply personal, spiritual, and authentic.

My background includes a Master's degree in Literature, a 100-hour meditation teacher certification, and years of experience as a writer and public speaker. I am ordained through Spirit of Love Ministry and believe every ceremony should reflect the unique love story of the couple standing before me.

What first inspired you to make salt?

I was first inspired to make salt when my husband and I noticed the salt drying on our skin after a swim in the ocean at Wrightsville Beach. I had seen videos of old French men in galoshes making fleur de sel with only a tarp, so I knew the salinity was worth testing and was confident I could have fun working with the process.

What did you feel the first time you made ceremonial salt?

The first time I produced a perfect batch of salt, I knew it was sacred salt. There is a ritual to the gathering, filtering, slow-heat evaporating, as well as the mental preparation to bring intentionality to the process that is perfect for my creative yet curious and analytical personality.

Here is more information about me!

How I Create Your Sacred Salt

Every batch of ceremonial salt begins with intentionally collected Atlantic Ocean water from Wrightsville Beach. I am intentional about the moon cycle, tide, which beach, and other condition variables. I like to practice meditation or yoga before harvesting the water so my mind is focused on the connection to intention. If I’m collecting water for wedding ceremony sacred salt, I will often listen to your wedding music.

I filter the water multiple times then carefully hand-distill the water over many hours until only pure sea salt crystals remain. The result is a one-of-a-kind keepsake created from the same ocean that witnessed your love story, a beautiful reminder that transformation often leaves behind something lasting and beautiful.

There is also the option for you and your partner to ‘take the plunge’ to gather the water yourself! Learn more about my different wedding ceremony package options.
