In cottage craft, salt has long been used in rituals to clear negative energy and cleanse spaces, as well as protect from ill will. Also, in ancient time, if you offered salt on the table to guests, it was a signal of good will and safety, similar to the saying ‘breaking bread’ with someone. Along those same lines, someone who is ‘worth their salt’ has value to an organization. There have been entire books written about the important historical implications of salt, such as “Salt: A World History” by Mark Kurlansky or check out the show Big History.
